Complimentary webinar: To Understand the Key Changes and Transition Requirements for the New ISO 22000:2018 Standard
The rapid development in technology, has transformed our lives right from how we live to what we eat. This technology has also transformed global food production & service, supply chain and allied industries involved to ensure the farm to fork approach provides safe and wholesome food to the consumer.
To meet the growing population from presently seven billion and with the United Nations projecting that figure to reach 9.8 billion in 2050, the pressure on present system to provide safe food will also grow. To increase the food availability, use of modern methods and technology has become the need of the hour. To increase the food production use of fertilizers, agrochemicals and sophisticated irrigation techniques has resulted in a growing dependence globally on high-yielding crop varieties leaving us vulnerable to any failure in their supply chains.
As we leverage on new technologies such as use of drones, artificial intelligence, robotics to feed the world in a sustainable and affordable way and to protect the planet’s natural resources. To ensure the food being produced is safe for human and animal consumption one of the solution is to adopt ISO 22000, Food safety management systems – Requirements for any organization in the food chain. As we have seen, there have been many food safety challenges for users along the supply chain since the International Standard was first published in 2005, prompting the need for a revision. Also since today’s foods are travelling across different nations crossing the borders across the global. Ensuring availability of clean & hygienic food has become a challenge to present day governments. Thus, the standard has been substantially revised to ensure it stays relevant to modern challenges in food safety and to ensure wholesome growth of the Organization by implementing ISO 22000:2018 standards.
About ISO 22000:2018
ISO 2200:2018, is the second revision of food safety management system after ISO 22000:2005. ISO 22000:2018 is applicable to all organizations in the food and feed industries, regardless of size or sector. Following the same High-Level Structure (HLS) as other ISO management system standards, such as ISO 9001:2015 (quality management), it is designed in a way that it can be integrated into an organization’s existing management processes but can also be used alone.
Key changes to the ISO 22000:2018 standard
The major changes to the standard include modifications to its structure as well as clarifying key concepts such as:
- The high level structure: in order to make life easier for businesses using more than one management system standard, the new version of ISO 22000 will follow the same structure as all the other ISO management system standards, the High Level Structure (HLS).
- The risk approach: the standard now includes a different approach to understanding risk.
- The PDCA cycle: the standard clarifies the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, by having two separate cycles in the standard working together: one covering the management system and the other, covering the principles of HACCP.
- The operation process: a clear description is given of the differences between key terms such as: Critical Control Points (CCPs), Operational Prerequisite Programmes (OPRPs) and Prerequisite Programmes (PRPs).
Important timelines
On publication of ISO 22000:2018 since June 2018, organizations currently certified to ISO 22000:2005 standards will have a 3-year transition period to upgrade to the new standard.
