The TÜV SÜD Energy and Media Efficiency, Environmental Sustainability (EME) standard focuses on energy-related and environmentally-relevant characteristics of plants, systems and machinery and demands use of the best available technology that is used as the benchmark for the standard. The TÜV SÜD EME standard can be applied to all plants, systems and machinery that involve characteristics determined by energy consumption and environmental aspects.
It is particularly suited for manufacturers and developers of plants, systems and machinery who aim to offer their customers cutting-edge solutions in this field based on efficiency- and environmental sustainability-focused product development. The TÜV SÜD EME standard is established and implemented at three levels, and can be documented by the relevant certificate.
EME system certification
Successful system certification according to the TÜV SÜD EME standard provides proof that development and design is based on highest efficiency requirements for machinery and systems.
EME system certification focuses on the design and development process and aims at ensuring that the principles of “energy and resource efficiency and environmental sustainability” are firmly rooted in the company. Opportunities for saving will be identified and fully realized at all levels. To do so, developers and designers must, for example, keep up with and document the technology used at all times and provide evidence of regular attendance of continued training.
EME type certification (product)
For successful type certification according to the TÜV SÜD EME standard, designers and/or manufacturers have to prove that the processes they use in the development or manufacture of a machine type are aligned to the requirements of energy and media efficiency and environmental sustainability. The characteristics of the machine type must be comparable in terms of energy efficiency and must comply with the requirements of the TÜV SÜD EME standard defined for the respective scope of application. The developers and/or manufacturers submit their process documentation as proof that they are able to systematically comply with and document these type characteristics, based on verification by means of random measurements.
EME unit certification (product)
Unit certification according to the TÜV SÜD EME standard applies to one individual, specific system. The energy and resource efficiency of the individual components and sub-systems and the overall system are analysed using a catalogue of criteria. The benchmark applied is the best current technology and/or verifiably equivalent applications. The plant or system must allow resource-saving control of operations.
